Have you ever wondered what your friends/family do for a living? I do! It is easy to tell people what you do when you are a teacher or police officer or doctor, but what about when you are an analyst, coordinator, manager, what do those titles actually mean? In my opinion, a title means nothing, but that is probably because my title is office manager/marketing assistant and do much more than my title implies. I've been called a receptionist 3 times in the past week so I thought it was time to clear up what I actually do for a living.
As I mentioned, my title is Office Manager/Marketing Assistant (yep, the slash is actually in my title). My job functions range from receptionist to marketing manager to licensed insurance agent. There are 12 people in my office and I am the only female. We don't have cubes here, we have trading desks and 3 offices. I happen to sit at the front desk, giving the illusion I am a receptionist, but trust me when I say it is probably one of the best places to sit in this place. There are 2 businesses in my office. One business trades weather derivatives and commodities and the other sells weather insurance. Most of my work goes to the weather insurance business.
Every day is different for me. I feel my most important role here is to complete market research as well as market our products to potential clients. Marketing includes everything from search engines to email to print to tradeshows. I also manage our customerdata base and am licensed to sell weather insurance. I typically only takes insurance sales inquiries when our main agent is out of the office. I also play the administrative role here. I manage our corporate records, order office supplies, coordinate with HR (which is managed at our sister company), and answer the phones. I guess you could say I'm a jack of all trades.
I'm not sure this completely clears up what I do for a living, but hopefully gives one more insight. I typically steer clear of mentioning this in writing in the event someone from work sees my blog, but I am three classes and a student teaching stint short of getting my teaching certificate. I don't have an official date or plan of when I'm going to finish, so I want to do the best job I can at my current job until I leave. I work with mostly good people, make good money, have great benefits and have a flexible schedule so I'm grateful to be where I am at right now. I've been here for 2 1/2 years which as some of you know, I've been quite the job jumper (I had 4 jobs in 2 years!), so it is nice to be here and to be established.
